Costumes, games and food aside!!! I have the honor of introducing you to this amazing, very popular South African cosplayer, Tayla Bartar. More commonly known as “Kinpatsu”, who sits down and spills the Cosplay beans with me about her cosplays and what inspired this hobby *fan girl screams* With both local and international fans, one often wonders how this is achieved? (I know…I was like whhhhaaaat?)
Q1. Tell us a little about yourself.
I’m currently a 21 year old student, I’m studying a fine art degree.
Q2. How did you come across this name “Kinpatsu”?
Kinpatsu means Blonde in Japanese, so technically my name is Blonde Cosplay, and since my real hair is blonde I thought it would be fitting.
Q3. What/who motivated you to start cosplaying and how long have you been cosplaying?
I was really inspired by Freltana Cosplay, they were the people that made me want to Cosplay. I saw their Dragon Age 2 cosplays at rAge in 2011 and I was just blown away by the fact that people could make costumes like that themselves and it just really inspired me to get involved with Cosplay. So the next year at rAge I decided to try do my first Cosplay, and now I have been cosplaying for just over 2 years.
Q4.Which Cosplay are you most proud of?
So far I think the Cosplay I am most proud of would be my Syndra costume from League of Legends.
Q5. You have both local and international fans, how did you start this?
Well I made my page last year in June and I only really had local people looking at it at that time. It kind of stayed that way until the end of the year, and then I posted my Jinx pictures and all of a sudden I had an influx of international people who started liking my page, turns out a few international League of Legends pages had shared my work and that’s how I think I got international fans, because of other international pages who were happy to share my Cosplays. Now I actually have more people from Brazil and the US that follow my page than South Africans.
Q6. Does your fans request any Cosplays, if so, which one is the most requested?
Jinx. People really seem to like my Jinx Cosplay and they want me to do more shoots with that Cosplay in specific.
Q7. Cosplaying is not always glamour, how do you deal with criticism?
I think at some point you just stop caring and realise that some people on the internet are just mean, and their opinion of you really doesn’t matter. You just need to remember that for every 1 horrible comment you get there are 100 nice ones. I’ve been called fat on many occasions “Too chubby for Jinx” “Fatarina” “Who fed Syndra” But I really don’t care, I’m happy with the way that my body looks and if other people don’t like it I really couldn’t be damned, I don’t even know who they are why should I value their opinion.
Q8. Do you have anything to say for people aspiring to be Cosplayers?
Don’t get despondent, if you mess up on something or your costumes don’t look the way you want them to don’t give up. Just keep trying because you will improve over time.
Q9. Do you have any tips on the do’s and don’ts of Cosplaying?
I guess the main Do’s and Don’ts for me would be Don’t be mean, and Do have fun!
Q10. Lastly, you are a gamer (like me :p), which games do you currently enjoy playing and how come?
At the moment I’m only playing League of Legends, I really love the game and I love so many of the characters in the game! I was also playing Wildstar earlier this year and it was also fantastic, the PVP was great and the combat systems were super fun but the servers are a bit dead at the moment, so if they do a server merge I think I will start playing Wildstar again too.
I would like to thank Tayla “Kinpatsu” Barter for her time and awesomeness!! You guys can check her out here
